The Pirate Bride / Appearances / Want a Visit from the Pirate Bride Crew?

Picture your classroom being tutored on the time-honored principles of hard-work, endurance, and dedication as taught by a peer. We have already visited many schools through out the region and the feedback has been 100% positive, from both educators and students.

Adventure!  Imagination! Mystery! All these things are found within the pages of our book The Pirate Bride but the entire story behind the novel tells a far more interesting tale.

The Pirate Bride is a creation from the mind of Anna McKinley.  At the time of the book’s inception, Anna was only seven years old!  Her story is as intriguing as it is inspiring.

Picture your classroom being tutored on the time-honored principles of hard-work, endurance, and dedication as taught by a peer.  We have already visited many schools through out the region and the feedback has been 100% positive, from both educators and students:

“I can’t believe a kid my own age has written a book!  That is so cool!  It makes me feel like I can do anything!”

– Oklahoma City 5th Grade Student

“After reading The Pirate Bride, I am going to write a book.”

– Brenna, 6 year-old from Edmond, Oklahoma

“I’ve seen many of these author presentations before, and your seminar is twice as good as any of them.”

– Oklahoma City Private School Educator

A visit from The Pirate Bride Crew can motivate your students in many ways.  What does a visit include?

  • The Crew includes author & creator, Anna McKinley (either in person or via personalized video appearance), co-author Ryan McKinley, and illustrator Jerry Bennett.
  • Message to your students by Anna about the day she invented the story, the process behind turning a story into a novel, and the truths that she has learned from this experience; plus, a peek into the upcoming sequel to The Pirate Bride
  • Presentation by Jerry Bennett on the evolution of his art—including overhead projections of drawings that he had made at the age of 4, all the way up to his current stunning productions.
  • Workshop by author Ryan McKinley detailing specific aspects of great writing, all personalized towards the age and abilities of your classroom.  Popular workshops are “Watch Movies and Television to Write Better Stories: Focus on Character, Conflict and Conclusion” and “True Character: Characters Worth Reading”, both very interactive, funny and informative.  The first is a highly visual presentation with photos and scenes from popular movies and television shows that highlight the importance of writing good characters (can work with large assembly groups or smaller classroom groups). The second is a more technical seminar that walks the class through the process of creating a compelling character (works best with smaller focus groups).

Many educators have used our visits as an anchor point around creative writing, or as a starting point for the processes involved behind the story writing process.  Either way, the students are eager and ready to write after we’ve stopped in!

Of course, you may have specific needs, and our program can be tailored to fit those.  Our seminars have worked well with large groups of 150 plus, or with small Reading/Writing Focus groups of 15.  Either way, the students are motivated right away to break out and start their own stories!

Present in all these talks are true principles about writing like brainstorming, revision, editing, perseverance and patience; also truths about believing in oneself, seeking after good peer influences, and what it means to have good character.

We also will provide an opportunity for your students to purchase The Pirate Bride with all its creators’ autographs at a discounted price!

If you would like to find out more about this unique in-school opportunity, please contact Ryan McKinley at ryan@thepiratebride.com He can work with you on content and format, as well as provide references as desired.

Regarding compensation, we are willing to work with school budgets…this is an experience that is too good to miss!  Don’t let your budget prevent you from contacting us.  We want to share our stories with your student!
